A Day in the life of my Craft Kit Business

A Day in the Life of my Craft Kit Business

Let’s get one thing straight: I do not wake up at 5am to meditate and sip herbal tea while visualizing my goals. I wake up because the dog needs to piddle, my son needs a ride to school and I need coffee.

8am-9am: Once everyone is settled, I begin the sacred ritual of breakfast and coffee. While I caffeinate, I check emails, Etsy messages, and respond to that one customer asking if a sewing kit includes a needle (yes—it always does). Once that's out of the way, I take a few minutes to log into Hay Day and check on my farm, because let’s be honest, those virtual chickens aren’t going to feed themselves.

9am-12pm: Then it’s time to make the things. This usually involves a glorious mess of fabric scraps, yarn bits, and me yelling, “Where are my good scissors?” despite being the only one in the studio. I prep materials for craft kits, film tutorial videos, test patterns, and pack up orders for dispatch, all while making sure my pup is cozy and snoring somewhere nearby.

12pm-1:30pm: At some point, I'll break for lunch and think about what to make for dinner. I may also throw in a load of laundry and tidy up the living room. A little reset here and there always helps. If orders need to be sent out then I'll scoot those down so they get on the truck for that day.

1;30-5pm (ish):Then it’s back to assembling craft kits, photographing finished pieces, and reminding myself (yet again) that no, I do NOT need to start another new project right now. Naturally, I ignore that entirely and dive into “research” to see if the new idea is even possible and where I can source the necessary materials. (As you can tell, the train occasionally derails throughout the day.)

Toward the end of the day, I tackle the digital to-do list: website updates, pattern edits, and social media posts. This is when I try to present myself as a calm and collected business owner. Definitely not someone who just spent 20 frantic minutes hunting for a specific fabric collection for that “totally unnecessary but very exciting” new project.

6pm - 10:30pm (ish): Once the workday winds down, I head upstairs, clinging to the hope that a magical little elf has prepped dinner (spoiler: it never happens). I catch up with my kids and the fella I’m married to, then get some fresh air while walking the dog.

After that, it’s time to settle in with a project that’s “just for fun” though let’s be honest, it usually turns into a new kit idea. Oops. And finally, the book I’m currently obsessed with calls my name, pulling me in until my eyes can’t stay open another minute.

As you can see my days are a mix of chaos, creative bursts, with a semblance of organized productivity. It’s messy, it’s joyful, and it’s 100% worth it. So if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live a “crafty life,” this is it and I love every second of it.
