Dreaming of Moody Autumn Days
Dreaming of Chilly Autumn Days
It's July. It’s hot. The kind of hot where your thighs stick to every chair, your hair decides to march to the beat of its own drum, and even your dog looks like he's questioning all his life choices. It’s that oppressive, sticky kind of heat that feels like a personal attack and drains every ounce of energy and motivation you have.
Over the weekend, we went to a Coldplay concert at an outdoor stadium, right in the middle of a heat warning. I think it hit 39°C with the humidity that night, and my body promptly said, “Yeah…no thanks.” Side note: if you ever get the chance to see Coldplay live then do it. Buy the tickets. Go. It’s worth it.
Having said all of that, you can bet your bottom dollar that I am daydreaming of those precious "ber" months. Those precious autumn months that lead us right into Christmas.
While everyone else is sipping frozen cocktails and pretending to enjoy the smell of sunscreen, I’m over here craving the scent of cinnamon, crispy leaves, and baked apples. I don’t want another salad, I want a stew that’s been simmering for four hours. I don’t want to go to the beach, I want to go apple picking in a cable knit sweater that I can finally wear without melting into a puddle.
Don’t get me wrong, I am giving summer a fair shot. We attended Blue Jays games, I'm (begrudgingly) wearing shorts and we have enjoyed many dinners outside on our deck. However, I’m built for brisk walks, cardigans, and evenings where it gets dark early enough to light a candle without feeling dramatic.
So here I am, halfway through July, clutching my air conditioner and dreaming of the day I can sip a hot chai without breaking a sweat. I'm manifesting blankets, plaid shirts and googling pumpkin and apple recipes like a rebel. I may be physically in summer, but mentally? I’m roasting butternut squash to make soup and pairing that up with homemade bread for dinner.
If you are counting down the days until the heat fades and the fog rolls in then welcome to my Autumn club. You are not alone. We can start trading our favourite fall recipes to get through summer.
Until we reach that glorious time, may your fans be strong, your drinks be cold, and that you get a couple of good hair days out of this rest of summer.
