Crafting for Life's Transitions: High School Graduation Edition
There comes a time in life where everything seems to shift all at once and I think I'm right in the middle of it.
Two weeks ago, our youngest graduated from high school. It marked the end of a 20 year era that began when his older brother started Kindergarten. I spent those years volunteering at their school, organizing events, packing lunches, driving to hockey/gymnastic practices, filling out endless permission forms and organizing birthday parties.
As I watched him walk across that stage, all of those memories came rushing back and I realized that this part of our parenting era is over. Was I relieved? Yes! Was I feeling sadness and nostalgia for those days? Also, yes! However, our kids will always need us, just in different ways.
I'm now looking around and realizing that there's a little more space in my life than there used to be. While that's wonderful, it can also feel a little strange. If you are in the same season of life, then I'm with you.
Given that early morning hockey practices no longer exist, you might settle in with a good book over your morning coffee, you might spend an entire weekend in the kitchen making jam or trying new recipes, or maybe you'll decide that this is your crochet era and you're finally going to pick up that darn hook and make something.
Why? Because you finally have the time. Think of it as filling up your cup.
Crafting and reading might not solve the world's problems, but for an hour or two while you're creating, the news can wait. The laundry can wait. The endless to-do list can wait.
It gives us permission to focus on something that is entirely our own and, for a little while, drown out the noise. Not because we're avoiding life, but because we're refuelling for it.
These small moments remind us that we are more than our responsibilities. More than our to-do lists. More than the roles we play for everyone else.
We're still learning. Still growing. Still creating. Still becoming.
And maybe that's what this next chapter is really about.
(Psst: if you're finally ready to pick up that darn crochet hook, you can find my crochet kits here: Crochet Kit Collection)
